Opening Bid

Posted 03 June 2008 by Ron

Before you can make an opening bid, you need to work out the value of your hand. To do so you count how many points you have. Points come in two types: your High Card Points (HCP) and your Length Points (LP).

High Card Points Length Points
An Ace = 4 points
A King = 3 points
A Queen = 2 points
A Jack = 1 point
For a 5-card suit add 1 point
For a 6-card suit add 2 points
For a 7 card suit add 3 points

If the total of your HCP and your LP is 13 or more you have enough to start bidding.

If the total is less than 13, you should start by passing unless you are in third position, where you can bid with 10 or more points, or if your hand is suitable for a pre-emptive opening bid.

I have only been doing the Daily Problem. It is excellent practice! I’ll send you more feedback as I get to explore more on the web site.
