Try this problem:

East dealer : North-South vulnerable

What would you do as West with:

(Answer later)

Seniors: We defeated Morocco 16-14 in Round 10, lost 14-16 to China Hong Kong in Round 11 and beat Israel 23-7 in Round 12. That gave us 53 Victory Points for the day, our best day so far, to be running sixth, 8.5 VPs ahead of ninth, with eight teams to qualify for the final stages. Germany had a great run with 61 VPs for the day, moving from 10th to 5th.

Australia Open Team: 15-15 vs Botswana, 16-14 vs Greece and 10-20 vs Monaco. Total: 41 VPs on the day and running 10t. With only three matches to go and 45 VPs behind 4th, the team has no realistic chance to make the Round of 16.

The Australian Women’s Team is doing best of the Australian Teams. They had a 16-14 win over Egypt, 22-8 vs Jordan and 14-16 vs Poland, 52 VPs for the day. The team is lying fourth and, with just one match to go, has an excellent chance to reach the Round of 16, which starts on Wednesday.

Answer to today’s problem:

This was Board 18 from Match 12 vs Israel:

At our table it went:

WestNorthEastSouth
    Pass 1diamond
2spade 4heart Pass Pass
4spade Dble All Pass

South cashed A, A, K and exited with a diamond. Declarer took the A and finessed in spades. He later dropped the Q to be one off for –100.

West’s 2 followed by 4 was hoping to be doubled there. Beware of what you wish.

At the other table West jumped to 4, North went 5 and that went one down, E-W +100 and +5 Imps.

The jump to 4 at this vulnerability is definitely the practical bid.
