What would you do as West with:
(Solution later)
The results of Stage 2 of the Seniors:
| 1. | NEILL | 260 |
| 2. | NOBLE | 255 |
| 3. | LILLEY | 252 |
| 4. | STUART | 242 |
| 5. | HIRST | 228 |
| 6. | KALMIN | 208 |
Our team played poorly in at least three of the five matches. With one round to go, we led the field, one VP ahead of NOBLE. NEILL had an easy last match and duly won convincingly. We lost our last round by 9 Imps, 13-17 VPs to miss the final. The loss was deserved with each of our pairs missing a simple defence to defeat the opposition game.
In the Women’s semis, HOFFMAN beat NEALE by 169-97 and RICHARDSON beat HAVAS by 149-140.

Back to today’s problem:
Although discipline says that West should pass East’s non-invitational 3
, this was a time to breach discipline. West has two aces and a singleton in the opponents’ suit. This makes the hand more like an 11 pointer than 6-9. This was the full deal from the Seniors, Stage 2, Round 3:

At the other table the bidding was identical except that South bid 4
over 3
. West went on to 4
. Both declarers made eleven tricks. No swing.
