Back to today’s problem:

Whether you play weak twos or a multi-2, North should pass. It is unsound to open with a weak two or a multi if you hold four cards in the other major. This was Board 5 from Round 7:

North dealer : North-South vulnerable

At our table it went:

WestNorthEastSouth
- - - 2diamond ? (1) Pass 2spade (2)
Pass Pass Pass

(2) Pass or correct

Lead: 7
With spades 3-2 and the Q coming down doubleton, South made ten tricks for +170.

At the other table North passed initially and North-South reached 4. This does not need the Q to drop doubleton and that was +620 for +10 Imps. That was enough to cost a team a place in the Seniors semi-finals.
