Broadbeach, Gold Coast, Saturday. In the final of the Gold Coast Teams, CAYNE, VERSACE, ZMUDZINSKI, BALICKI, LAURIA, SEAMON (USA, Italy, Poland) beat OHNO, YAMADA, INO, HIRATA (Japan) by 88-33, conceded after 36 of 48 boards.
The Ivy Dahler Swiss Pairs was won by Nye Griffiths – Ian Robinson with a score of 169 VPs East-West. First North-South with 166 VPs were Richard Jedrychowski – Apolinary Kowalski.
With one round to go Ian Thomson and I were lying second East-West, two VPs behind the leaders. There were three critical decisions, including two part-scores which we should have defeated routinely, but which were allowed to make. The third was a game we missed after the auction above. Had we found the winning action on all three, it would have been enough to win.
On the above problem, Round 9, Board 23, I thought partner’s 2
was showing spades and clubs. With spades and diamonds, 2NT would have been the bid, as long as partner was prepared to play beyond 2
.
The auction continued:

(2) Good hand
Now I was convinced partner’s second suit was clubs, with possibly a 5-0-3-5 pattern. I bid 4
and played it there. My view and decision were not vindicated as partner held:
